What Is a Hold Factor? The Simple Guide to Choosing the Right Hair Product

If you've ever stood in front of a shelf of hair products wondering what the difference actually is, you're not alone. Most brands throw around words like "strong hold" or "flexible hold" without giving you anything useful to go on. That's why we created the Hold Factor system - a simple 1–10 scale that tells you exactly how much hold you're getting before you buy.

What Is a Hold Factor?

A Hold Factor is a number from 1 to 10 that tells you how much control and structure a product gives your hair. The lower the number, the lighter and more natural the hold. The higher the number, the stronger and more structured the hold.

It's designed to take the guesswork out of choosing a product - so you can match the right formula to your hair type and the style you want.

The Hold Factor Scale

  • 1–2 — Light hold: Soft, flexible and barely-there. Great for fine hair or styles that need movement and definition without stiffness.
  • 3–4 — Medium-light hold: Natural texture and volume with a relaxed finish. Ideal for casual, effortless styles.
  • 5–6 — Medium-strong hold: Reliable all-day control with a natural look. Works for most hair types and styles.
  • 7–8 — Strong hold: Structured styles with serious staying power. Good for thicker hair or styles that need to last.
  • 9–10 — Maximum hold: Maximum control for the most demanding styles.

Our Products and Their Hold Factors

  • Regent Curl Cream - Hold Factor 2. Soft definition and invisible hold for natural curls.
  • Mariner's Salt Spray - Hold Factor 4. Light, windswept texture with a natural matte finish.
  • Foundry Clay - Hold Factor 6. Strong matte hold for structured, all-day styles.
  • Crown Powder - Hold Factor 7. Instant lift and volume with a clean, weightless finish.

How to Choose the Right Hold Factor for You

The right Hold Factor depends on two things: your hair type and the style you want.

  • Fine or thin hair: Start lower (2–4). Heavy products can weigh fine hair down and make it look flat.
  • Medium hair: The sweet spot. Most Hold Factors work well - it comes down to the style you want.
  • Thick or coarse hair: Go higher (6+). You need more product to get control and hold that lasts.
  • Curly hair: Lower Hold Factors (2–4) tend to work best - you want definition without crunch.

You can also combine products to get the best of both. Mariner's Salt Spray (Hold Factor 4) layered under Foundry Clay (Hold Factor 6) gives you natural texture with strong all-day hold - that's the thinking behind the Matte Duo.
